René van Rems- Chief Executive Officer
René van Rems is a world-renowned ambassador of the floral industry.
Originally from Amsterdam, The Netherlands, René has called San Diego, California, home for over 20 years. He is a member of the American Institute of Floral Designers (AIFD), The National Speakers Association, and the Professional Floral Commentators International (PFCI).
René was formally educated in the entire spectrum of Floriculture/Horticulture through his studies at the Rijksmiddelbare Tuinbouwschool at Aalsmeer (Floral Institute). He has led design shows, workshops, and seminars throughout the US, Canada, Europe, and Asia on the styling of fresh-cut flowers.
A frequent speaker at leading art museums including the Minneapolis Art Institute and San Francisco’s de Young Museum, René has also been featured in numerous national publications like California Florists, Sunset Magazine, Flowers & Magazine, Floral Management, Florist Magazine, and Flower News. René’s design work has been featured in Better Homes & Gardens as well as the Florists’ Review publication of 101 Wedding Bouquets.
René and his work have been covered on television (HGTV), particularly for his European influence on trends in American floral design. In 1995, the American Horticultural Society awarded him the Francis Jones Poetker Award, and in 2001, Van Rems was the recipient of the Los Angeles Flower Market’s first annual René van Rems Award for excellence in design education.
René served ten years as Director of Promotion for the California Cut Flower Commission. René is a founding trustee of the newly formed Institute of Floral Arts & Sciences, a non-profit, business-focused teaching Institute in Vista, California serving the global floral community.
Kaelin Chappell Broaddus- Director/Publications
A combined appreciation for books, letter forms and print making led Kaelin Chappell Broaddus to pursue a career as a book designer. She studied Graphic Communications at California Polytechnic State University San Luis Obispo where she graduated cum laude with a Bachelor of Science in the spring of 1984.
During the past twenty-plus years Kaelin has worked for many and varied publishers including university press publishers Stanford University Press and the University of Arizona Press, educational publishers Addison-Wesley and Wadsworth, and trade publisher Harcourt, Inc. In June 2000 she left her position as Associate Art Director at Harcourt to establish Kaelin Chappell Book Design, a freelance enterprise that enables her to work with a wide array of publishers.
Kaelin has garnered many design awards from such prestigious publishing organizations as The Association of American University Presses and Bookbuilders West.
Jake Tison- Videographer
Jake Tison has worked as a videographer/editor on documentaries, sports programming, instructional videos and incentive presentations. He spent five years with DirecTv Sports This Week as an editor and camera operator. His most recent work includes projects for such organizations as Motorola, Computer Sciences Corporation, The Scripps Research Institute, San Diego Gas & Electric, the Pacific Life Holiday Bowl, and the Bosu and Kings Schools. He has worked as an assistant editor on the award-winning documentary Bigger Boxes as well as The American Dream Project, a documentary scheduled for the summer of 2005. As a videographer, his work has taken him to location shoots around the world. Jake is now in pre-production for a series of instructional videos covering segments of the professional floral industry.
He is a graduate of the Musicians Institute in Hollywood and an avid photographer.
Bruce Wright- Editor
Mr. Wright has been writing about flowers, floral design, and the floral industry for more than 20 years. As the editor of Flowers&, the monthly magazine published by Teleflora, he has worked with many of the world’s most renowned floral artists to produce trend-setting, visually captivating photo features. He has been recognized by the American Institute of Floral Designers with its Award of Merit (1992) and has twice been invited to present educational programs at the Institute’s National Symposium. His reporting and editorials in Flowers& have earned him a reputation as an astute and well-informed observer in the field of floral design and business.
